While individual prostitution is legal in Macau, entities that organize and make money from the sex trade may be put behind bars for a maximum of eight years. Macau’s nightclubs that operate inside major casinos are found to be the main perpetrators of prostitution, ruining the lives of hundreds of girls who are lured to gambling hubs, supposedly to work as models or waitresses, only to end up being traded for sex. This comes after the gambling hub recently faced hard-hitting criticism from the US State Department for not doing enough to address human trafficking.
